Love, Homosexuality, and Miriam Quiambao

There are two things that i would rather not talk about at the same time; religion and homosexuality. In a casual conversation, you’ll end up either offending someone or loosing yourself in the process of expressing your thoughts about it.

Last Saturday, former beauty queen Miriam Quiambao was the guest on one of the most sensible shows in ABS-CBN (Bottom Line with Boy Abunda).  Being a former Miss Universe contestant, it is predictable that Boy would ask about her stand on Trump’s decision to allow transgenders to compete for the title. It is known that Quiambao openly disagrees with this decision, and vocally expressed it through several interviews.

“Homosexuality is not a sin but it is a lie from the devil. Do not be deceived. God loves gays and wants them to know the truth” (exact words from Miriam Quiambao’s tweet).

When I was in college, a “manong” refused to sell some burgers to my gay best friend, telling him that homosexuals are the works of the devil, blah, blah. That was the first time I saw someone discriminate a gay right in his face. It was a nasty act that brings nasty feelings.

Ten years after, this exact argument was brought up by Quiambao. I never expected such from her, being surrounded by LGBT people in her chosen career. Nobody saw that coming, an unfriendly and discriminating remark from someone being idolized by gays everywhere. In my own opinion, there is nothing wrong with being homosexual. It is not a sin and certainly not the lie from the devil. Never is and never will be.

Here’s the thing: I believe that homophobes are homosexuals trapped in their own skin, scared of the truth that they are concealing beneath their blanket of faith. Miriam Quiambao’s journey as a beauty queen is marked by the highest support from LGBT community. She may express her disagreement on the Ms. Universe issue, but going deeper is just not right. Everything is all about respect. If she chose to be straight, good for her, but she should also respect the choice of other people, their sexual preference and most importantly their way of life. Calling homosexuality as a “lie of the devil” is tantamount to saying all LGBT are works of the devil: evil, lewd, vulgar beings that can do nothing but contribute to the abomination of mankind. Where is the love? Where is the respect?

  1. I believe Miriam has no intention of hurting or discriminate any gay individual it’s just that she might have with her the understanding of what the scripture is referring regarding homosexuality. The very reason she quoted this, that “God loves gays and wants them to know the truth”: this is exactly true which I would personally agree. God loves everyone (John 3:16) and He hates sin (Psalms 45:7), but this doesn’t mean that we can’t commit sin anymore nor we may use God’s love as an excuse to live in sin for any form of unrighteousness is not of God. The question is, “How can we establish God’s righteousness from our unrighteousness?” – It is by deepening our relationship with Him in prayer, obedience, and reading the scriptures.

One common saying in the observance of the laws of the land is that, “Ignorance of the law excuses no one”. If a person from another place happen to be caught smoking in a community with an implemented smoke-free law with an equivalent fine or imprisonment for such offense, I guess the person will be upset and furious for the humiliation, the worse is he will have an argument with the arresting officer and would rather insist his ignorance. On the other hand, if the person had the idea ahead about such law before being caught, he may still feel humiliated but perhaps will keep himself calmer for he knew he made a mistake. What I’m trying to point is, Miriam knew about what the scripture is saying about homosexuality and she just reiterated it to the public whom gays happen to be offended and upset because they probably knew nothing about what was just Miriam is trying to relay is what the scripture is saying about it. However, you have a point for saying “there is nothing wrong with being homosexual” because God loves gays but He hates homosexual offenders (which is the act that causes the sin) as referred to 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. In this case, if the presence of sin is there then lies and deceit goes along with it therefore it is not of God. God loves us and created us in His own image and for His own purpose. Every good thing we have now or have ever has came from God. God has provided us with all that we need to enjoy life and please him at the same time. He tells us in His Word how to please Him and tells us what doesn’t please Him and what He hates.

However, God detest the acts that resulted to sin of gays…
Leviticus 18:22 – “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.” (NIV)
Leviticus 20:13 – “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” (NIV)
Romans 1:26-27 – “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” (NIV)

The reason Jesus suffered for us that we might live in His righteousness by receiving Him as God of our life and resist the things causes us to sin: Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God (1 Peter 4:1).

I know plenty of godly people that love the Lord but proportionately speaking many Christians are just professing believers and continue to refuse understand the essence of being God’s children. That’s why God sent delusion spoken about in 2 Thessalonians. Many Christians, have been deceived and are now deluded such that they will not believe the truth to be saved and seek God purpose in obedience to HIS will. Scripture says, they will perish if they do not awaken and repent.

2 Thessalonians 2:11: And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. Unrighteousness is SIN. God hates SIN.

But God is love…God is indeed Love as we are told. God is also light and God is truth. God is innately good but above all He is Holy. No darkness, evil or sin can have any place with God. Sin is evil and sin is darkness.

I hope you will not misunderstood me for making this reply to your blog, my intention is not to pass judgment to gays but to share the truth because God loves gays as He loves us all. God bless and the love of God be with us all!
